Murshidabad is one of the most important towns in the West Bengal. This town has an eventful and long history started before the time of British rule and beyond.
There are different opinions regarding the name of Murshidabad. One school of thought said that the name Murshidabad came from the name of 'Mukshudabad' which was the seat of administration during the reign of Murshid Quli Khan.
Murshidabad Municipality has been constituted on 1st April' 1869 having an area of 17.25 Sq.Km. At present, municipality has 16 wards with a population of 44024 peoples and percentage of literacy is around 75% as per the census of 2011.
